About the conference

This conference is the result of the collaboration between

ATEE

The Association for Teacher Education in Europe is a European, international, non-profit organization that is engaged in the promotion of research and dialogue on teacher education and teachers’ continuous professional development in Europe. The conference is one of the annual events organized by ATEE. It is connected to the work of the Education for Social Justice, Equity and Diversity Research and Development Community (RDC) of the Association. About the other ATEE conferences and about the activities of the Association you can read more on the website of ATEE: www.atee1.org.

Aims

The main aim of the conference is to facilitate scientific dialogue around the theme of social justice and diversity in connection to teacher education in a wide sense through questions and answers offered by solid research studies. Traditional conferences often give very limited place for real dialogue and sharing around findings and problems. However, research is always a social activity too, and it needs to be discussed, shared and reflected in research communities. Scientific activities might also better contribute to the transformation and development of societies and communities if knowledge coming from research is constructed and reflected together by gathering findings, questions and possible answers. In order to promote dialogue, discussion and common knowledge construction, the sections of the conference will be organized in accordance with this principle, and the whole conference will be characterized by this atmosphere of sharing.
Other dimensions of dialogue are the connection of research and practice, together with the link between global and local reality. The conference would like to promote these relations as well. The event will be social not only in its topic, but in its organization. This will connect this international and scientific conference with the needs, practice and agency of the local communities. Local NGOs, schools and municipality institutions take part in the organization and programme. In this way, the conference is embedded in the local context, and also would like to contribute to the development of these local communities.
Finally, the conference wants to enhance the links between different areas of Europe and the world, with a special focus on the perspectives of Eastern Europe and other semi-peripheral contexts. In order to facilitate the participation from these regions, cheaper possibilities of participation and accommodation will be offered to researchers with financial difficulties.

Special characteristics

In relation to its aims, the conference has some special characteristics. It partly follows the traditional structure of scientific conferences (key notes, parallel sections), but in the 60-minute parallel sections there will be only two papers presented briefly in 10-10 minutes leaving time (40 minutes) for discussion. The full paper or at least a shorter draft version of the paper and the presentation should be sent to the organizers one month before the conference. These will be uploaded to the website (to a platform accessible for participants). It is very important that the participants choose and read the papers in advance, and in this way after the shorter presentations real dialogue can take place about the research studies in the sections. The number of presentations must be limited to 110 in order to keep the above detailed structure.

NGOs and schools will take part in the programme, their voice and activities will be (re)presented during the first reception, through the multicultural walking tours, and the special ‘social dinner’. Later on you will find the registration form to these last two events on our website.

The ‘social dinner’

Different NGOs will invite the participants in groups for a dinner where they can know the activities of the selected NGO and they can talk with its members. More details to follow.

The multicultural tour

Members of NGOs will guide the participants in smaller groups to help them discover the often hidden historic and current multicultural life of Budapest. More details to follow.
